Definition

  • It is a process of encapsulating the drug tablet to protect it from external environmental factors and to preserve the characteristics of the tablet .

  • Covering the tablet is either with one layer or several layers, depending on the type of tablet, in several different ways, by dipping the tablet in solutions, drying it and forming covers to reach the market.

Advantages of the coating:

  1.  Ease of swallowing, because covering the tablet with a gelatinous material helps the pill pass through the oral cavity and esophagus without difficulty or stopping in a specific place.
  2. The arrival of the drug to prolonged periods of release called sustained release (SR), which expresses a longer range of the effectiveness of the drug in the body.
  3. Preventing the drug from being affected by stomach acids when it is packaged, which may cause irritation and may lead to joys, problems, and disturbances in the esophagus, and the continuation of the drug going and reaching the intestines.
  4. Prevent fixation of the drug in the stomach .
  5. The outer cover contains lubricants .
  6. The drug reaches the intestines in larger places and more blood capillaries, and this means more and faster absorption and spread, and gives sustainable effectiveness .
