Pharmacological action :

  • It works as a bronchodilator because of its specialization on beta-2 receptors .
  • It is considered fast-acting because it is taken in a spray and is almost short-term. For example, someone wants to play football or do an exercise. He must take the medicine before that, for fear of cold air entering the airways, causing a pulmonary crisis . the Albuterol and Terbutaline are often classified as  fasting action . ( 2- 3 Hr )
  • Salmeterol and Formoterol are considered the best option for crisis patients before bedtime to reach rest in sleep. It is used as a bronchodilator for about 12 hours. Mostly crisis patients depend on both types of medications .

Uses :

  • Terbutaline : The effectiveness of this drug has been discovered on pregnant women and in the last months of pregnancy, including premature birth , to stabilize the fetus in the womb and expand the uterus for the fetus until the appropriate birth period for the fetus . and used in acute asthma by meter dedose inhaler .
  • Albuterol : It is used in the event that the patient has an acute attack .
  • Salmeterol and Formoterol : Long-term use and cases of chronic crisis, and people who suffer from crisis while sleeping, these medicines are recommended .

Side effects :

  • Fatigue
  • , insomnia
  • , lack of activity
  • , restlessness
  • , of course, these are less side effects than taking it orally .

Drug – Drug interaction :

It is forbidden to use the drug with any drugs that increase norepinephrine because it will increase its toxicity, so we use concomitant use .

Contraindication :

  • It is not recommended to take the drug orally, or in high doses, especially with heart diseases, because it will affect the beta receptors on the heart muscle and lead to irregular heartbeat or tachycardia.
  • These drugs are not given alone because they only expand the airways, but they will not affect the inflammation, so they are given in combination with corticosteroids to reduce inflammation and thus reduce the asthma .
